You’ve been kind of busy lately with Madonna. Was it six tracks on MDNA, the latest album which is about to come out?WILLIAM ORBIT: It was six the last time I counted, but we keep adding special tracks.You keep adding or she keeps adding?WILLIAM ORBIT: She’s driving the train, but I come along happily.She always says musically you finish one another’s sentences. What does that mean, musically? Give us an idea of what it’s like collaborating with her?WILLIAM ORBIT: We definitely been working together for a long time, so there’s a certain telepathy. We tend to get into the guitar zone now. We get the acoustics out and do it campfire style.I’m not a great singer, I sound like a mosquito trapped in a bottle. She’s a fabulous singer, but she’s very forgiving. She just wants it to work as a song. That’s where we start.You just strum it out and work it out that way?WILLIAM ORBIT: Yeah, yeah…You’re in touch [with Madonna], you’ve got to work with her tomorrow?WILLIAM ORBIT: Probably tonight… What she has decided to do is extra accoustic versions. There’s some pretty hard, rocking tracks. There’s a very different variation of styles. Mostly pretty savage, actually. The singles that have come out aren’t necessarily representative.She wants to do some sort of more downbeat version?WILLIAM ORBIT: Downbeat…kind of the banjo and things like that.
Can't wait for her album! I'm sure it will be banging since her single "212" is unbelievably catchy! Maybe it will feature her upcoming collaboration with Lana Del Rey!It’s called ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ and it’s out in September. It’s about a young girl trying to find it.That girl who’s at the end of her childhood trying to get a job and make some money.She needs to get what she can get! She needs to go out there and show people she knows how to work for it.
"For me, it's just music -- two talented people doing a record together, doing two records together, and that's what it was," The-Dream (real name: Terius Nash) tells Billboard.com. "It wasn't about an incident that happened. The true thing really is to forgive, and… you want to believe in people."
"It was Rih's idea," says the producer. "Not only do we work together, but [Rihanna] is a friend of mine. And it's like, 'You wanna do something? Then cool, let's do it.' I don't know how she got the logistics and how it happened -- maybe she'll talk about it one day. I showed up at the studio, and it was like, 'All right, cool, let's finish this record,' which we probably should have finished the first time we did it."
"I think [the topic] that should be more on the tongues is: how do we proclaim to be a nation of forgiving, and we go by all of these rules and everything, but we can't actually do it?" he says. "It actually makes you look weaker than your adversary -- if you don't have the power to forgive, but you lie and say that you did.
"Because this is about her," The-Dream continues, of Rihanna. "If she can forgive, that's where she is mentally. As a friend, it's like, 'Okay, cool. Let's roll.'"
At first, Madonna only hired you for one track…
MARTIN SOLVEIG: Yes. About ten different producers were contacted. Madonna wanted to work with two or three of them to keep a certain coherence in the album. We had a great connection and in the end we worked on six tracks.Have you met William Orbit?
MARTIN SOLVEIG: It was a pretty crazy encounter. We laughed a lot in the studio. At one time, we were working together. He in his own studio, I was in mine, but in the same building. Madonna went from one room to the other. We exchanged a lot.
We’re quite the opposite, William and I… in everything…
William is English, I’m French. He’s tall, I’m small. He’s very messy, I’m quite organised.
Madonna’s the opposite of the producer she’s working with.
She was very gentle with him. With me, she was more harsh and direct.
She’s somebody who pushes people and I think that she allows them to give it their best.Did she ask you something specific? Did she give you any guidelines?
MARTIN SOLVEIG: She wanted to smile.
With William [Orbit] she was more introspective. To me, she said: “When people listen to your songs, I want them to smile. It’s what I like in your work. In general, when listening to your songs, it’s positive.”
She thinks it’s something that’s currently missing today and people need that.Could the leak of “Give me all your Luvin’” have consequences on the release of MDNA?
MARTIN SOLVEIG: If the full album would have leaked, it would have made her rethink the whole project… the album, a new tour. I’m quite sure about that.
She really wants to come back for her fans. When you work so hard, you don’t want unfinished versions to leak on the internet.
I think she was really dissapointed and a bit hurt…Is she generous in her business deals?
MARTIN SOLVEIG: Yes! She’s very genereous on the copyright and credits. She’s very fair. I would have done it for free any way (laughs).
And if it needs to be redone, I’ll do it immediately…If Madonna asks you to play a DJ set at the Stade de France on July 14th, would you say yes?
MARTIN SOLVEIG: I can’t confirm this at the moment… But there’s a big chance that I won’t be far from the field that day… (laughs)

Yes, the album release date has been pushed back. Working on some new songs, making the album even better! Thank you all for understanding.Hope it isn't delayed too much, but it's understandable trying to get a real "hit" out before the album to create buzz. Not that "Better Thank I Know Myself" isn't awesome, it just hasn't really burned up the Top 40!
On attending the Grammys with a Pope look-alike: “The religious figure is there because he was called on by Roman’s mom to rehabilitate him.”
On her debut performance of “Roman Holiday”: “I had this vision for him to be sort of exorcised—or actually he never gets exorcised—but people around him tell him he’s not good enough because he’s not normal, he’s not blending in with the average Joe. And so his mother is scared and the people around him are afraid because they’ve never seen anything like him. He wanted to show that not only is he amazing and he’s sure of himself and confident, but he’s never gonna change, he’s never gonna be exorcised. Even when they throw the holy water on him, he still rises above.”
On getting in her comfort zone: “I wanted to create a movie. I reached out to a great friend of mine, Hype Williams, to create the movie. I just wanted him to be in this monastery and I wanted to see him in his comfort zone. It’s funny because it’s the most comfortable I’ve been on stage in my entire life.”
On why she chose “Roman Holiday” for the Grammys: “The Grammys chose ‘Roman Holiday.’ The producers of the Grammys came to the studio and I played them ‘Roman Holiday,’ and I could not play them another record after they heard that. They went crazy. I could have chosen to do a no-brainer pop song, but I can’t do it anymore. I have to stay true to what I’m doing.”
On Madonna’s influence: “Meeting Madonna changed my life. Working with Madonna changed my life. Rehearsing with Madonna for two weeks changed my life. When you look at these amazing women, you have to realize that a lot of work goes into this. I, for the first time, refused to go to any parties. This performance was it and this is the first performance that I’m proud of in my entire career. I saw how much Madonna sacrificed and how much she rehearses and rehearses and rehearses and rehearses, and everyone there was like, ‘We got it.’ But she was like, ‘No, I want you to know this choreography in your sleep.’ We did know it in our sleep by the time we got on the Super Bowl stage. But when I saw that, it inspired me so much, the same way Wayne inspired me to start really becoming a beast as a rapper. The Madonna situation inspired me to give it my all and put that work in.”
On how Madonna got her to change her wig: “Madonna was the first person in history who was able to make me change my wig. I had some choices in terms of color and she was like, ‘Nicki…’ She has a way with words. She’s a monster, but when she’s speaking to an artist, she’s really sweet and she knows how to word things so you don’t feel uncomfortable. She was like, ‘I don’t know about it.’ So I really went through four color changes on my wig for the Super Bowl. We got the platinum blonde and she smiled. Once she smiled, I was like, ‘Thank you Jesus.’ I couldn’t take it anymore. She was one of the only people who could get me to wear red lipstick and when I did it, I ended up loving it, so I told her, ‘I’m so glad I trusted you. You’re amazing, you’re the queen, and everybody has to bow down.’”
On M.I.A.’s Super Bowl stunt: “My first feeling was disappointment, only because of my respect for Madonna. I’m a cuckoo lady too, but I would never be able to do it off the strength of Madonna. There are fines that go into these things, and I just thought, ‘Oh my God. I hope they don’t penalize Madonna.’ Madonna knows the artist that M.I.A. is and it was her decision to take the risk with all of us. We were kinda all firecrackers and she took that risk. She’s done some crazy things becoming the icon that she is, so I think that’s why she was able to forgive M.I.A. I love M.I.A. and I don’t want to say anything that is the wrong thing, but me personally, I couldn’t see myself doing it, just for the respect for Madonna. I wouldn’t want any backlash to come back on Madonna.”
On her new single: “‘Starships’ is one of my absolute, absolute favorite records on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. It just sounds like a Ryan Seacrest-type of record. And I’m so excited for you to give this song your blessing, Ryan, because I know people are gonna love it. It feels right. It just feels good. It makes people feel happy and that’s all I want. I want to start the year off with making people feel good. The [Grammy] performance was the performance, that was my clear craziness, and now it’s time to make people dance and have fun, and that’s all I want to do.”
